God is Sovereign (Part 1)
We live in territories ruled by governments, and these territories can be a country, a state, or even a county/city within a country. The government may be various types: democratic, parliamentary, presidential, federal, or unitary, and some of their prime responsibilities are to create rules and regulations and make laws to ensure social justice. There may come occasions in life when we feel that wickedness wins over righteousness in this world. But when things don’t seem fair, it is comforting to remember that there is a supreme being who exists and rules over all the governments of the world. He holds the supreme authority over everything in this universe.
In Psalms 14:1, we read about a group of people who say, “There is no God.” David calls them “fools.” They reject the existence of God in spite of all the general revelations in this world. God has revealed Himself very clearly in the Scripture, but it is the deliberate rebellion that leads people to deny the existence and sovereignty of God. Psalms 19:1 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” The sad part is that not only have they rejected God as the creator, but they have also refused to admit God as their Lord.
Scripture clearly teaches us that God is Sovereign. One of the key verses that talks about the Sovereignty of God is Colossians 1:16–17: “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” The word sovereign means lord, ruler, or king. The Bible often refers to God as the one who rules over all. The word “Lord” is the most commonly translated word as the name of God and specifically as a name for Jesus Christ. The major features of divine sovereignty can be summarized as God’s control, authority, and providence.
